JMJC Dominate Ocean State International

 

 

         Providence, RI - The Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Club (JMJC) dominated the field at the Ocean State International Judo tournament over the weekend further establishing it's status as the premier elite Judo program in the USA winning 20 total medals including 12 gold. Burnt Hills High Senior, AJ Silverman (17) and Burnt Hills Sophomore, Kyle Vashkulat (15) led the way both winning double gold. Silverman went 3-0 to win the 17-19yrs. 66kg weight class then duplicated that going 3-0 to claim the men's 66kg title. Vashkulat posted a 3-0 record to win the 17-19yrs. 90kg division and also went 3-0 winning the men's white-brown belt 90kg category. Schalmont High School Freshman, Ronni Aragona (14) easily won a gold in the 13-14yrs. 53kg division going 3-0 on the day. Aragona then added a silver medal performance in the women's 52kg weight class losing only to JMJC teammate, Schenectady County Community College Freshman, Jess Elizalde (18) in the final. RPI sophomore, Shirley Yacubowicz (19) also won both a gold and a silver medal. She went 3-0 to win the 17-19yrs. 48kg weight class then followed that up with a 3-1 record in the women's 48kg weight class to take a silver. US #1, Carrie Chandler (24) bumped up a weight class from her normal 52kg to 57kg and cruised to a 3-0 record to claim the title. Fellow JMJC #1, Katie Mocco (21) moved up as well from her 70kg division and easily won the 78kg weight class going 3-0, which  earned her the "Most Outstanding Senior Female Player" trophy for her efforts. Burnt Hills High Junior, Jeremy Liggett (16) continued his winning ways going 3-0 to win the 60kg men's title improving his 2005 win total to a JMJC best of 79. The JMJC's other Jeremy, Jeremy Galib (12) moved up in age to easily win the 13-14yrs. 58kg weight class posting a 3-0 record to boost his overall 2005 record to 29-3 (.906 winning%). Dan Santos (20) breezed to victory to claim gold in the men's 73kg weight class going 4-0 along with being awarded the "Most Outstanding Senior Male Player" trophy to make it a JMJC sweep of those awards. Burnt Hills High Junior, Jemaine Jarvis (16) closed out the JMJC gold medal count going 3-0 to win the 17-19yrs. 55kg weight class. Albany State Freshman, Yuko Sin (18) fought extremely well taking a silver in the men's 81kg division with his only loss coming in a close and exciting final to Adam Cervenka (Czech Republic). Burnt Hills Junior, Nick Delpopolo (16) continued to improve since his coming back from a knee injury and took a silver in the 17-19yrs. 73kg division with his only loss coming in the final to US Jr. #1, Bobby Lee. Micah Woosley (14) picked up his first medal as a JMJC member winning a bronze in the 13-14yrs. 64kg division posting a 3-2 record. Dave Chapman (19) added another bronze when he went 3-2 in the men's 90kg weight class. Albany State Freshman, Cleo Grinberg (18) closed out the JMJC's medal count winning a bronze in the women's 70kg category posting a 3-2 record. Paul Borodin (25) posted a 2-2 record in the men's 66kg but did not place.
