Liggett Wins
Double Quebec Gold
Montreal, QC - Members of the
Glenville based, Jason Morris Judo Club (JMJC) enjoyed another
stellar weekend capturing 12 total medals including four Gold at the
Quebec Open International Judo tournament October 8-9, 2005. Burnt
Hills High School Junior, Jeremy Liggett (16) completely stole the show winning Gold in the 17-19yrs. 60kg
division along with claiming the 60kg mens title going 9-0 over the
weekend. Liggett had some impressive wins including ippon (full
point) victories over top Canadians, Sergio Pessoa and Oliver Masse.
Pessoa is originally from Brazil but moved with his family to Canada
in March of 2005. Pessoa's father, Sergio took 5th place at the 1987
Worlds in Essen, Germany ironically losing to an American (Kevin
Asano) in the bronze medal match. Liggett's results here helped him
extend his lead in the point race for the #1 spot on the junior
roster of the next closest American, JP Durand. Carrie Chandler
(24) went 4-0 on the
day to claim gold in the 57kg weight class. Chandler, who is the #1
ranked American at 52kg moved up to 57kg here to get more
competition. Chandler's victories included an overtime thriller
against top Canadian, Francoise Nguele in the semis. Carrie tied the
score late then pinned Nguele with sankaku one minute into the extra
period to secure the win. Jayne Clason (20) from Scotland who
has been training with the JMJC all summer captured a gold in 52kg
going 4-0 winning all her matches by ippon.

junior ranking. JMJC newcomer, Dan Santos (20) followed his US Open 66kg silver with a silver here in the 73kg
weight class posting a 4-1 record. Santos is from Brazil and has
been in the US since March. Santos has been living and training in
Westchester and now splits his time with Westchester Judo and the
JMJC to get more training partners. Albany State Freshman, Cleo Grinberg
(18) picked up a pair
of bronzes. One bronze was for the 17-19yrs. 70kg division and the
other was the womens 70kg category. This result puts Grinberg in the
#2 spot on the junior roster. Burnt Hills High Junior, Jemaine Jarvis
(16) also picked up a
couple of bronzes winning one in the 17-19yrs. 55kg division and the
other being the mens 55kg catagory. Jarvis was a total 6-2 for the

from her normal 70kg division just as Chandler did to get more
competition. RPI sophomore, Shirley
Yacubowicz (19) captured a bronze
in the 48kg weight class going 3-2 on the day. Burnt Hills High
Sophomore, Kyle Vashkulat (15) had a fantastic weekend putting forth his best performance as a
JMJC member. Vashkulat took 5th place in both the 17-19yrs 90kg
division and the mens 90kg weight class posting a 6-3 record for the
weekend. Burnt Hills High Senior. AJ Silverman
