Providence, RI - Athletes from the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) and home of 2008 Olympic USA JudoCoach, Jason Morris, captured 16 total medals including 12 gold at the Ocean State International Judo tournament Sunday, October 29, 2006.
That medal count was good enough for the JMJC to claim second place for the Ocean State team title.
Burnt Hills High Senior Nick Delpopolo (17) led the way by first going 3-0 to win his regular 73kg weight class then he moved up and posted a 4-0 record to win the 81kg division which included wins over 2004 Olympian, Rick Hawn and #3 ranked, Harry St. Leger.
Delpopolo improved his already impressive record for the year to 75-24 and was awarded the "Most Outstanding Senior Player" for his performance on the day.
Schalmont High Sophomore, Ronni Aragona (15) also sparkled on the day, winning 2 gold medals.
Aragona went 3-0 in both the 15-16yrs. 57kg weight class and the 15-16yrs. 63kg division.
Burnt Hills Junior, Kyle Vashkulat (16) took a gold in the 15-16yrs. 90kg category with a 3-0 record and was 3-0 to capture another gold in the 15-16yrs. 100kg weight class.
Vashkulat then went on to claim a silver medal in the men's 90kg division which included a tight loss to the USA #1 ranked and eventual gold medalist, Garry St. Leger.
AJ Silverman (18) easily took the gold in the men's 66kg division, posting a 3-0 record and looking very sharp.
Nick Kossor (20) also went 3-0 to capture the 60kg title.
This was a good warm-up for Kossor as he is scheduled to compete in the Swedish Open next weekend and then the Finnish Open the following weekend.
Carrie Chandler (25), who will join Kossor in Europe, cruised to the 57kg title with a 3-0 mark.
Shirley Yacubowicz won the 52kg weight class posting a 3-0 mark on the day and was given the "Most Outstanding Senior Female" for her efforts.
Marina Shafir (18) went 3-0 to win the 78kg which included two big wins against #3 ranked Asma Sharif who Marina has never beaten before today.
UAlbany Sophomore, Cleo Grinberg (19) captured a gold in the 63kg division posting a 3-0 mark on the day.
Jeremy Galib (13) had a superb day winning a gold in the 13-14yrs 66kg division then moved up in age to the 15-16yrs and won a bronze.
Burnt Hills High Junior, Tobias Loffler won a gold posting a 3-0 record in the novice 60kg weight class.
Christie Woosley (13) turned her best performance to date winning silver medals in the 13-14yrs 52kg division and the 15-16yrs 52kg category, including taking Jr. National Champion, Victoria Sokolov, to overtime in the final of her first division.
Closing out the JMJC's medal haul was Josh Woosley, who captured a silver in the 15-16yrs. 60kg weight class.
