Toronto, Ontario - Athletes from the Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) hauled in 11 medals, including 3 gold, at the 2006 Ontario Open, held over the holiday weekend.
Burnt Hills High School Senior, Jeremy Liggett (17) led the way taking a bronze medal on the first day (Saturday) with a 5-1 record in the 17-19yrs. 66kg weight class then following up with a victory on sunday winning the Men's 66kg division going 4-0.
This win was also easy on Liggett's wallet as he collected the $500 prize for all the Gold medal winners in the senior divisions.
Liggett's wins included a major upset when he defeated 2006 Pan Am Championship bronze medalist, Sasha Mehmedovic (CAN) in the semis in only his second event since moving up from 60kg.
Liggett then finished off Rodion Melchakov (CAN) with an arm bar early in the bout to take the title.
Travis Stevens cruised to the 81kg title posting a 4-0 record winning all of his matches by ippon and also banked $500.
Stevens is currently ranked #2 in the US at 81kg.
Liggett's classmate at Burnt Hills High, Nick Delpopolo (17) had a fantastic day on his way to a 5-1 record and a silver medal at 73kg.
Delpopolo lost in the final to North America's best 73kg player at the moment, Nick Tritton (CAN) in a tough back and forth battle.
Delpopolo is now 0-4 against Tritton in this up and coming North American rivalry.
Tritton was the "Outstanding Male Player" at the the 2006 Morris Cup at Burnt Hills High School.
Nick's sister, Helen (13) enjoyed a successful weekend as well winning a bronze in the 17-19yrs. 70kg weight class then followed up with a another bronze performance the next day in the Women's 70kg division.
Shaker High grad, Marina Shafir (18) turned her best JMJC performance to date going 7-1 over the weekend.
Marina started out be winning a gold medal in the 17-19yrs. 78kg category then went on to take a Silver in the Women's 78kg division, which included a first time win over Andree Bijould (CAN) in the semis.
Shafir lost only in the final to veteran and #2 ranked Canadian, Marylise Leveque.
Burnt Hills grad, Hannah Martin (18) joined Helen Delpopolo as a double bronze winner as she posted impressive 8-2 record over the weekend.
Martin's bronzes came in the 17-19yrs. 63kg & Women's 63kg divisions.
Burnt Hills High Junior, Kyle Vashkulat (16) matched his performance of last year taking a bronze in the 17-19yrs. 90kg weight class to close out the JMJC medal count.
Ronni Aragona (15) and AJ Silverman (19) just missed landing on the podium talking fifth in their respective divisions.
Aragona posted a 4-2 record in a terrific showing in the 17-19yrs. 63kg weight class and Silverman matched that in the Men's 73kg category, up from his normal 66kg division.
Aragona and Silverman both looked sharp in moving up weight classes as they equally put forth inspired efforts.
