Delpopolo
in action at the 05 Rendez Vous
Wakefield, MA - Athletes
from the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) won 17
total medals including 10 gold at the Pedro's Challenge Judo
tournament on Saturday February 18. Burnt Hills High School Junior, Nick
Delpopolo (17) was the biggest
highlight for the JMJC as he went 5-0 in 73kg on the day including
two wins over US Open silver medalist, Dan Santos (Brazil) and a
victory over Radu Brestyan who is currently ranked #2 in the US.
Delpopolo capped his run off with a dramatic last second throw to
beat Santos in a thrilling final to capture the title along with the
$250 cash prize that the winners of all the Elite men's and women's
divisions received. Albany State Freshman, Cleo Grinberg (18) added $250 to her wallet as well by
winning a gold in the 70kg division posting a 4-0 record. RPI
Sophomore, Shirley
Yacubowicz (19) recovered from an early loss to join her JMJC teammates Delpopolo
and Grinberg in the money as she claimed the 52kg crown with a 4-1
record. Schalmont High School Freshman, Ronni Aragona
(14) had a banner
day as she walked away with two gold medals. She went 4-0 in both
the 13-14yrs. 57kg weight class as well as the women's elite 57kg
division. Aragona just missed out on collecting the $250 as her
elite division didn't meet the requirement of having at least 5
competitors to win the money as hers had 4. Josh Woosley (15) excelled in the
15-16yrs. 55kg division going 4-0 to pick up his first tournament
title as a member of the JMJC. Josh's brother, Seth (6) turned
in another solid performance going 3-0 to win the 5-6yrs. 23kg
division. Amanda Galib (9)
joined the gold medal parade posting a 2-0 mark to win the 9-10yrs.
32kg weight class. Burnt Hills High School Junoir,
Jemaine Jarvis (16)
had a strong
outing going 6-0 to haul in the 15-16yrs. 60kg championship and
Burnt Hills High Sophomore Kyle Vashkulat (15) closed out the
JMJC gold medal count winning the 15-16yrs. 90kg division with a 4-0
mark. Jeremy Galib (12) pocketed two silver medals in a gutsy
performance as he injured his groin during the day but continued on
to medal in the 13-14yrs. 65kg and 15-16yrs. 60kg losing only in the
final to JMJC teammate, Jarvis. Helen Delpopolo (13) and Christie
Woosley (12) added to the
JMJC count both pulling down silver medals. Delpopolo's medal was is
the 63kg elite women's division and Woosley's in the 11-12yrs. +52kg
weight class. Albany State Freshman, Yuko Sin (18) turned heads
picking up a bronze in a very tough 81kg category. Sin had a win
over #3 ranked Harry St. Leger who he hasn't beaten in six tries.
St. Leger had defeated Sin in the bronze medal match at the 2005 US
Nationals. Yuko then appeared to beat #2 and 2004 Olympian, Rick
Hawn when 1 minute into their bout, Sin smashed Hawn with uchimata
that should have been called ippon but was only awarded a waza-ari.
The experienced Hawn managed to mount a comeback and pinned Sin when
they landed awkwardly after a weak attack. Burnt Hills Junior, Jeremy Liggett (16) won a bronze in the 60kg division
going 3-2 with both his losses coming at the hands of a quality
German player, but the second loss was mired in controversy as it
appeared Liggett threw the German for Ippon as the ref indicated but
the two side judges overruled the call and awarded the score for the
German which prompted protests from the JMJC to no avail.
Laura
Galib (8)
closed out the JMJC medal count taking home a bronze in the 6-8yrs.
27kg division. Alex Capo (8) fought well
going 2-2 to place fourth in the 7-8yrs. 27kg weight class and Jonathan Woosley
(10) did the same
with a 2-2 record in the 9-10yrs. 37kg category.
Jess Elizalde (18) and Jeff Albino
(23) fought hard in
their respective weight classes but did not place.
