Chandler
& Kossor Claim Gold
Etobicoke, Ontario - Members from the Glenville, NY based Jason
Morris Judo Club (JMJC) won 8 medals including 2 Gold at the Ontario
Open November 22-23, 2003. Carrie Chandler (22) continued her winning
ways going 5-0 in 57kg including a dominant victory over rival Maryse
Giulbalt (CAN) in the semis to win the title. Burnt Hills High School
Senior, Nick Kossor (17) turned in his best performance to date
going 5-0 to claim the 16-19yrs. 60kg crown winning all of his matches
by ippon. Kossor who originally hails from Coatsville, PA earned
a valuable 5 points towards making USA Judo's Jr. World team which
will compete in Budapest, Hungary October 14-17, 2004. Jeremy Liggett
(14) won a bronze medal in the Sr. 55kg weight class with a 3-1
record and then added a silver the next day in the 16-19yrs 55kg
division also going 3-1. Liggett lost in both division to Canadian
rival, Cory Paquette (15). Liggett and Paquette battled in two very
tight matches with the slightly older Canadian gaining the slightest
advantage for the victories. Newest JMJC member, Jen Conte (25)
took a Silver in the +78kg division posting a 3-1 mark losing only
to Canadian #1, Olia Berger. Conte is on her way down to the 78kg
weight class and was extremely outweighed but fought very well and
her match with Berger should have gone into overtime but Conte received
a questionable penalty for stalling late in the bout. Burnt Hills
High Senior, Dave Chapman (17) turned in a great performance taking
a bronze in the 90kg division posting a 3-1 record. Along with Kossor,
Chapman is also vying for a spot on the Jr. World team. Nate Torra
(20) won a bronze at 66kg with a 4-1 record losing only to Canadian
#2, JF Villemure in a thrilling overtime match. Torra dominated
the fight, but couldn't overcome the biased officiating which was
bad all day. Liz Burns (19) was also a victim to the officiating
but had a good day overall winning a bronze at 52kg with a 4-1 mark.
Next up: Carrie Chandler and Nate Torra will compete this weekend
at the Dallas Invitational.
