Chapman Takes Silver, Rubin & Silverman Seventh
Miami, FL - Burnt Hills High School Senior, Dave Chapman (18) of the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Club (JMJC) went 4-1 on his way to taking a silver medal in 90kg at the High School Judo Nationals March 21, 2004. Chapman gained valuable points on the Jr. rankings roster towards making the USA Jr. World Championship team which will compete in Budapest, Hungary October 14-17, 2004. AJ Silverman (16) took seventh place in 66kg going 4-2 on the day. Silverman is a Sophomore at Burnt Hills High along with Chapman. Gregg Rubin (18) also went 4-2 for a seventh place finish at 73kg. Chapman is currently in the #1 spot to make the Jr. World team, but there are many events left before USA Judo selects it's team. The team will be picked at the close of USA Judo's Fall Classic September 4-5, 2004 and the athlete with the most ranking points in their respective weight classes will be chosen. Chapman is attempting to join JMJC teammates Liz Burns, Carrie Chandler and Nate Torra as Jr. World team members. Chandler and Torra competed in the 2000 Jr. Worlds in Tunis, Tunisia and Burns made the 2002 team that competed in Jeju, Korea. Over the same weekend Burns and Chandler competed in the Citta de Roma in Roma Italy. Burns lost a tough 52kg first round match to Carolina Johanson (Sweden) and was eliminated. Chandler won a overtime 57kg thriller in the first round against 2000 Olympic Bronze medalist in 52kg Xiang Liu (China). Carrie then went up against 2001 World Silver medalist, Debbie Gravenstien (Holland). Gravenstein took an early lead but Chandler came back then Dutchwoman took charge and won the match with 30 seconds left eliminating Chandler. The girls will stay on and attend a training camp at the Italian Olympic training center then compete at the Estonian Open March 27-28.
