Glenville, NY - (January 6,
2005) - Dave
Grimes (17), a rising star from the Glenville, NY based Jason
Morris Judo Club (JMJC) suddenly and tragically passed away on December
19, 2004. Grimes, who recently just received his Green Belt, had
only been in Judo for 9 months but had collected medals at the
Morris Cup (Burnt Hills, NY), Am Can International (Amherst, NY),
Ontario Open (Toronto, CAN) and most recently the Northeast Open
(Paterson, NJ.) He had already climbed to the #6 spot on USA Judo's
Junior National roster (IJF Jr.) in the 81Kg category.
Grimes
competed at the 2004 Fall Classic National Championship when he was
only a yellow belt and impressed all who saw him fight. "Who is
that guy? That's the best yellow belt I have ever seen," said
San Jose State Coach, John Serbin.
Grimes was a
Junior at Burnt Hills High School in NY where he was on the
Wrestling team. He was a very popular kid and was liked by many as
the wake on December 22, 2004, as attested to by the over 500
mourners on hand to pay their
respects.
"Everyone in our club loved Dave and every minute of dealing
with him was positive," said JMJC Coach, Jason
Morris. "I was very excited about the prospects of his
Judo career and the very big possibility of him dueling with JMJC
teammate and good friend, Yuko Sin for a spot on the 2006 Junior
World Team" continued Morris. In Dave Grimes' honor the JMJC
has established the "Dave
Grimes Scholarship"
which will be used for up and coming athletes like Grimes to fund
them to camps an competitions. The JMJC will also honor Grimes by
establishing the "Dave
Grimes Award" at the 2005 Morris Cup IV, which is a
tournament it hosts on April 30. The "Dave Grimes Award"
will be chosen by all the coaches that attend the Morris Cup for the
athlete that demonstrates
the most
potential, along with having a good attitude and a display of good
sportsmanship.
