Chandler Finishes Ninth

Rotterdam, Holland - Carrie Chandler (23) of the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Club (JMJC) went 2-2 at the Dutch Open and finished in ninth place. Among Chandler's wins was a victory over 2000 Olympic Bronze Medalist, Ann Maria Gradante (Germany). Chandler overcame a koka deficit by scoring yuko with only 2 seconds remaining to upset the German. Chandler lost a tight battle to Liudmila Bogdanova (Russia) in the quarter finals,  then dropped her loser's bracket bout to Ana Carrascosa (Spain) and was eliminated. This result secured Chandler's best ever performance on the European tour along with adjusting to her new 52kg weight class. Chandler moved down from 57kg after losing the 2004 Olympic trials. Liz Burns (20) also completed her most successful tour. She is adjusting to a new weight class as well moving up from 52kg to 57kg. Burns lost her first round to 2000 Olympic Champ, Isabel Fernandez (Spain) by only a koka and frustrated the Spaniard the entire five minute bout. Burns lost her next match to Belgium #1, Katrien Ongena. This was Burns' second loss to the Belgian on the tour having lost to her in Finland as well but this match was much closer. Katie Mocco (21) lost her first 70kg match to Polina Tchekanina (Russia) and was eliminated. This was Mocco's first European tour and did extremely well against much more experienced and accomplished athletes. The JMJC women return to the states on Monday and will gear up to compete in the Liberty Bell April 2-3. This is all preparation for the US Sr. Nationals in Virginia Beach on April 21-22 were they can earn a berth on the USA Judo world team. The worlds are in Cairo, Egypt form Sept. 11-14.
