Chandler Wins Bronze

Prague, Czech Republic - Carrie Chandler (23) of the Glenville, NY based, Jason Morris Judo Club (JMJC) won a 52kg bronze medal in the Czech Open over the weekend. Chandler's only loss was in the semis to Mariana Enache (Spain) and automatically took third in the single elimination event. Normally, Chandler would have had to fight a bronze medal match, but the Czech open organizers where trying a new system. Chandler became the first American to medal  on the winter/spring European tour so far this year and there are only 3 events remaining. Carrie also became the first JMJC athlete to break through in a European "A" event. There are 9 total European "A" events on the entire tour for both men and women. JMJC teammates Liz Burns (20) and Katie Mocco (21) had some tough draws and lost there opening rounds and were eliminated due to the new system there. Burns (57kg) lost a tough fight to eventual silver medalist Mai Hiromura (JPN). Normally, Burns would have the opportunity to fight back and possibly vie for a bronze but the single elimination format does not allow that. Mocco (70kg) fell to 2004 Jr. World Champ, Anett Meszaros (HUN) in a close first round battle and was eliminated. The JMJC women will now gear up for the camp in Czech, which goes until thursday then they will head on to Rotterdam, Holland to compete in the Dutch Open. "The girls are doing very well and gaining valuable experience towards the future" said JMJC coach, Jason Morris. "I'm very proud of the way that they are competing and hanging tough as I know how difficult the European circuit is" added Morris.
