2008 Morris Cup Results
     Burnt Hills, NY - 454 athletes representing 12 states, two Canadian provinces and the Republic of Korea descended on Burnt Hills High School in Burnt Hills, NY on Saturday May 3 for US Judo's 7th annual Morris Cup, a Senior Level E qualifying event for national judo rankings. The event sponsor is the Glenville-based US National Olympic Training Center at the Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) on Rt. 50. The US National Judo Team coach, Jason Morris, had many of his own students win Gold medals in this highly-competitive event. The winners of the elite divisions also took home $250 in prize money and among the JMJC players who won gold were Burnt Hills High School senior Kyle Vashkulat (17), BH-BL class of '06 Hannah Martin (19) along with teammates Natalie Lafon (27), Helen Delpopolo (15), Brad Bolen (19), Justin Flores (28) and Travis Stevens (22). '07 Burnt Hills graduates Nick Delpopolo (19) and Jeremy Liggett took silvers in 73kg and 66kg respectively. Burnt Hills Junior Angela Creutzberger (17) picked up a bronze at 48kg.

The JMJC scored its best point total to date (123) as more than 20 local players participated to win 35 total medals. They included Matt Barker from Glenville who took silver in a novice division, Janelle Snider who took second in the +78kg division while Kathy DeValk from Balston Lake won gold in her lightweight masters division. Gloversville resident Christie Woosley (15) won a hard-fought gold medal. O'Rourke Middle School 7th grader Jack Hatton won a gold medal in his 12-and-under division while Clifton Park's Brendan Belott took gold at his heavyweight 5/6 year old division. Nisky's Amanda Borges won a bronze medal in her first serious competition. There were as many as 20 other local participants that didn't win medals but won valuable mat experience which will serve them and local judo well in the years to come.

"This was our biggest and best Morris Cup so far and I expect that 2009 Morris Cup VIII will surpass this year's event. With all the work we've putting in in support of the Beijing Olympics the Morris Cup didn't get all my attention. Next year our local program will be a lot stronger and we hope to win even more medals," offered Jason Morris when asked to sum up this year's even in a few words. Rhode Island's Mayo Quanchi judo club won the team title for the fourth time with 133 total points (5 for first, 3 for second and 2 for third) with the JMJC finishing a close second.
