Miami, FL - Travis Stevens (22) of the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Center won a silver medal at his his first Pan Am Championships held at the James L. Knight International Center in the
Hyatt Regency in Miami. Stevens adds this to a Gold he won last summer at the Pan Am Games in Rio.
Stevens opened with a tough win over 2007 Pan Am Championship silver medalist, Emmanual Lucenti
(Argentina) which Stevens won by pinning Lucenti in overtime. Stevens then strung together three
more wins to make the final against Guilherme Luna (Brazil) which Travis narrowly lost in
overtime. Stevens defeated Luna the next day in the team competition by waza-ari. Stevens'
JMJC teammate Katie Mocco (22) went 2-2 in 78kg to place fifth. Mocco was leading her bronze medal bout before getting caught and thrown
by eight time Pam Am medalist Lorena Briceno (Argentina). This was Mocco's third trip to the Pan Ams with her best finish being a bronze in
2006 in Argentina. JMJC's coach Jason Morris was the Pan Am team coach as well was very pleased with the the team's performance.
"The athletes competed hard against quality competition and except for some minor tactical errors were right in the mix" Morris said.
Stevens and Mocco were joined by JMJC teammate Hannah Martin (57kg) who competed and won a bronze in the Olympic Zone qualifier.
