Hannah Martin (20) and Travis Stevens (22) led the
way for the Glenville, NY-based Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) by both claiming
titles at the US Open held at the Olympic training center. A student
at SCCC, Martin (57kg) posted a 4-0 record at on the day. Included among
Martin's wins was an upset win in the semis over 2007 World Championship
ninth-place finisher Marti Malloy. This was Martin's first US Open crown.
Martin had lost to Malloy in their previous two match ups.
Among the 81kg men Travis Stevens breezed through a tough draw to win his
third straight US Open medal and second gold medal. Stevens disposed of all
four of his opponents by ippon (full-point) to further solidify his #1 US
ranking. Travis' 2006 US Open win sparked his current phenomenal run which
has placed him among the elite national and international players. SCCC
students, Kim Carpenter (24) and Kyle Vashkulat (18) along with Natalie
Lafon (27) joined Martin as first-time US Open medalists by winning bronze
medals and bringing the JMJC team total to five which was enough to win the
unofficial team title.
Carpenter continued her rise in 52kg as she went 3-1 to bring her ranking up
to a career high #3. Vashkulat competed on both days in his normal 100kg
weight class then in the Open the following day. He went 3-2 in 100kg to
place fifth bringing his ranking to a career high #4. Kyle then went 3-1 in
the Open division to win a bronze and take over the #1 spot on the US
roster.
Natalie Lafon went 3-1 on the day to hold on to her #2 ranking at 48kg just
behind Ann Shiriashi. Along with Vashkulat, Nick Delpopolo (19), Helen
Delpopolo (15), Angela Creutzberger (17) and Nick Kossor matched or bettered
their best US Open performance placing fifth. Nick Delpopolo was very close
to making the final as he lost an epic overtime battle with longtime #1 at
73kg Ryan Reser in the semis. Reser went on the claim the title. AJ
Silverman (20) turned in his best performance to date by making it all the
way to the quarters were he lost to Reser but ended up in seventh place with
a 3-2 mark at 73kg. Hudson Valley student, Jeremy Liggett (19) also went 3-2 to place seventh as he was unable to match last years bronze medal performance.
